Why would one of the blacks on the planet with a geology degree become a financial advisor? Especially, here in Texas, pretty much the center of the universe for oil and gas drilling?

Because it's far, far more lucrative entering the AA political kleptocracy - for life, if possible - than it is to actually have to use your mind in a daily, technically-demanding and responsible corporate position.
He likely found out quick that a corporate geology job was not as easy as graduating with that degree.
That, and you rarely have the peacocking opportunities - check the suit - that the political gig provides.
